A recent article
in the March/April 2006 edition of Marketing Management, a publication of the
American Marketing Association, reported that 25% of the 425 U.S. online shoppers
surveyed "strongly agree" that they would distrust a Web site that
does not have a professional appearance. The survey, conducted by Web development
firm Questus, underscores the need for businesses to have a professionally designed
Web site. About 43% said they somewhat agree with that statement, and 24% said
they neither agree nor disagree. Only 7% said they somewhat disagree with the
statement, and a mere 1% said they strongly disagree.
The study also examined the critical factors for influencing a decision
to purchase products on a Web site. Price was the main determining
factor, according to 68% of respondents. Shipping options were second
in line, with 44% citing that factor. Product descriptions (38%),
site navigation (37%), and checkout process (32%) were also critical
factors.
Even if a Web site looks professional and the price is right, consumers
might still abandon a company's Web site if they have online transaction
failures. A survey from Harris Interactive, commissioned by TeaLeaf
Technology, found that 89% of customers experienced such problems,
and 34% of them said they would turn to a competitor if this happened.
Among the commonly experienced transaction mishaps were: error messages
(40%), a poorly navigable Web site (37%), the inability to complete
a transaction because of an endless loop (31%), and difficulty logging
on to the Web site.
