MARKETING TIPS FOR YOUR WEB SITE
When it comes to
marketing your Web site online, there's no secret formula or different way of
doing things than marketing your physical store. Just like off-line marketing,
online marketing is plain old marketing. To be successful online or off, your
marketing efforts must have a clearly defined goal along with an understanding
of your target market. Will your Web site replace your hard copy marketing kit?
Will it help close sales? Will it create an additional revenue stream? Will it
help support other marketing activities by providing a professional online presence?
After you've defined the goals of your online marketing efforts is
it possible to accomplish your online objectives with your existing
target market? If you want your Web site to replace mailed materials,
you may never accomplish your goal if the majority of your customers
do not use the Internet. This may happen if you are targeting seniors
since they make up only a small percentage of Internet users. However,
their children are a much higher percentage of Internet users so
you may want to target them instead so they can pass that information
along to their parents.
The key to success is being able to clarify your objectives and obtain
measurable results to know your return on investment. If your Web
site will replace printed material, figure out the cost of that printed
material and compare it with the cost of building and maintaining
your Web site.
When it comes to marketing online, both design and content are important.
The overall look and feel will determine whether visitors will stay
or move on. Your site needs to reflect your brand and be consistent
with your other marketing collateral. Ease of use is important so
keep it simple. After a visitor has decided to stay, your content
needs to grab their attention. Make sure you use language your target
market understands and anticipate questions they'll have so you can
address problems they have that you can solve. This will help the
visitor feel like you understand their needs. Your content should
logically and thoughtfully lead them to important points and entice
them with calls to action throughout the site, whether you want them
to purchase online, pick up the phone to call you or fill out an
online form.
If you are launching a brand new Web site, handle your Web site's
launch just as you would any new initiative. Distribute a press release.
Create an inexpensive postcard with a picture of your site, and send
it to everyone in your database along with an offer that inspires
people to visit the new Web site. The better the offer, the more
likely you'll get traffic.
Include a section on your Web site for current news and updates and
make sure to update it frequently. You can include information about
new clients you've obtained, events you attended, industry related
articles and any other news that may be of interest to your customers.
When someone expresses interest in your company, encourage them to
visit your Web site.
Link with other Web sites to help build traffic. If you have colleagues
to whom you regularly refer business, offer to put a link to their
Web site on your site and ask for a reciprocal link. The more relevant
sites that link to yours, the higher you'll rank in search engines.
Businesses today can't afford to operate without a Web site. However,
before you invest in your Web site, create a plan for how the site
fits into your overall business objective and marketing goals. Then
leverage the Web site and integrate it into your existing marketing
efforts.
