MAKE YOUR WEB SITE SIMPLE OR LOSE CUSTOMERS
When it comes to
selling products online, simple is better. Consumers are now demanding that companies
have a simplified purchasing process, devoid of high bandwidth downloads such
as multimedia and animation. According to a recent survey, non-informational
offerings are starting to have a negative impact on Web site traffic. The survey
was an extensive survey analysis by the team reporting to Terry Golesworthy,
president of the Customer Respect Group, an Ipswich, Mass.-based research/consulting
firm. Not surprisingly, almost one in five business-site visitors told Golesworthy's
team they would abandon a site if they found it too difficult--or insufficiently
intuitive--to use. "If you are searching for flights and you don't like
Expedia, you can just go to Orbitz," he said.
Both Expedia and Orbitz are ecommerce Web sites, however. With service
companies that have brochure Web sites, there can be even greater
danger. "The customer may stop doing business with you altogether," says
Golesworthy. "They won't bail on you as a site. They may bail
on you as a company."
According to an
article at CIOInsight.com where
a synopsis of the survey findings can be found, "The site visitor's
pain from overdesigned or overprogrammed sites--those being two different
but equally sinful efforts--is more than mere time-wasting. It can
be annoying and distracting, and the fluff can literally make it
much more difficult for the site attendee to actually get the information
that would allow him/her to make a purchase." Confusing navigation
and pages taking too long to load were discussed in the BannerView.com
newsletter, "Don't
Make the Mistake of Offending Your Web Site Visitors."
Many times, Web site owners will throw animation, flash and fancy
graphics at their Web site visitors to impress them, when actually,
they are often doing this to have bragging rights about how cool
their Web site is. Remember, when designing a Web site, it is to
be designed for your customers, not yourself. Reference the BannerView.com
newsletter, "Let
Go of Your Ego."
BannerView.com E-Business Solutions were designed with usability
in mind. Web sites are designed, first and foremost for your customers
and second, for the Web site owner. Ultimately, if you want a Web
site designed in a manner that will turn away your visitors because
you need "bragging rights," it's your money you'll be throwing
away. However, keeping your customers in mind when evaluating your
current or potential new Web site is simply good business.
