A WEB SITE IS A CONSTANT WORK IN PROGRESS
Everyone would love
to have a perfect Web site such as having all the content read a certain way,
have all graphics placed in a certain manner and have all the products laid out
just right. However, when preparing to unveil a brand new Web site, it's not
always feasible to have everything perfected before launch. Some people run into
the problem that if the Web site is not 100% perfect before it's launched, they
choose to delay the launch. What you find in this situation is that the Web site,
which should have only taken two weeks to develop and launch, is now months passed
the projected launch date. Not only is business lost because of the delay, you
are pulling your hair out trying to get things "perfect."
If you think this way, what you need to know is that a Web site is
a constant work in progress. Your Web site should never be 100% perfect,
nor does it need to be. Let's look at perfection (with regard to
Web sites) two ways:
1) Perfection is in the eye of the beholder, much like beauty. 100%
perfection to you may mean something completely different to your
customers. You may think that all the content on your Web site is
great and the layout and graphics are fabulous, but your customers
may hate your Web site. The opposite may be true as well. You may
think your content stinks and your layout is terrible, but your customers
may love your Web site.
2) Perfection is a moving target, always something to strive toward,
but never actually obtained. If you did in fact, launch the perfect
Web site, what motivation would you have to continually improve the
site? None! Well, technology changes and online buying habits change.
Web sites need to adapt to these changes in order to keep customers
coming back. Therefore, ignoring your Web site because it was perfect
when you launched it means you are left with an outdated Web site.
Having a great Web site that generates business for your company
is what matters, not having the perfect Web site. Your Web site should
always be a constant work in progress so that updates that continually
improve the return on investment are made.
