The New Domain Name Extensions
In case you haven't heard, many new domain name extensions have become available. Instead of the most common domain extensions such as .com, .net. .org, you can now get extensions like .rocks, .ninja, .business and many more.
What do all these new domain name extensions mean for you?
Since many of the good .com names have been long gone, these new extensions may provide an opportunity for new and existing businesses to better brand themselves. Geographic specific domain name extensions are also available. If your business serves a local market, such as Las Vegas, securing a domain name ending in .vegas may be a better alternative if the name ending in .com isn't available for registration.
Keep in mind that just because you can register a domain name using one of the new extensions, doesn't mean you can infringe upon someone else's trademark. Trademark owners have protection regardless of the domain extension so don't expect to register microsoft.business or coke.pizza and not have the trademark owners come knocking.
Some of the new extensions can be rather expensive. Extensions such as .law can run more than $200 per year and appropriately priced .luxury can be more than $500 per year! Not all of the extensions are that expensive, but most are more expensive to register than .com names. The good news is that it's more likely a domain name matching your business name will be available under one of the new extensions since it simply becomes too expensive for people to hoard names in the hopes that they can sell them later.
One challenge with the new domain extensions is that some older web browsers and online services may not recognize the new extensions as valid website or email addresses. This is more of an inconvenience currently as technology is constantly being updated.
